Exit Polls, Turnout, and Bandwagon Voting: Evidence from a Natural Experiment

چکیده
We exploit a voting reform in France to estimate the causal effect of exit poll information on turnout and bandwagon voting. Before the change in legislation, individuals in some French overseas territories voted after the election result had already been made public via exit poll information from mainland France. We estimate that knowing the exit poll information decreases voter turnout by about 11 percentage points. Our study is the first clean empirical design outside of the laboratory to demonstrate the effect of such knowledge on voter turnout. Furthermore, we find that exit poll information significantly increases bandwagon voting; that is, voters who choose to turn out are more likely to vote for the expected

What Makes Voters Turn Out: The Effects of Polls and Beliefs
We use laboratory experiments to test for one of the foundations of the rational voter paradigm —that voters respond to probabilities of being pivotal. We exploit a setup that entails stark theoretical effects of information concerning the preference distribution (as revealed through polls) on costly participation decisions. The data reveal several insights. First, voting propensity increases s...

We set up a model of elections or referendums with two alternatives to study how voter turnout and election outcomes are a¤ected by the publication of exit polls on election day. We nd that the introduction of an exit poll inuences the incentive to vote both before and after the poll is published, but the sign of the e¤ect is generally ambiguous. The fact that exit polls inuence the incentiv...
متن کاملOne in a Million: A Field Experiment on Belief Formation and Pivotal Voting∗
Instrumental voting models predict that turnout depends on the chance of casting a pivotal vote, which is typically extremely low in large elections. Evidence from psychology and behavioral economics suggests that misperceptions of extremely unlikely events are common and subject to systematic biases, sometimes called the non-belief in the law of large numbers. We provide a model of voting when...
متن کاملCoordination and turnout in large elections
Competitive elections are frequently decided by which side can generate larger turnout on polling day. When decided on whether to turnout voters are assumed to balance the cost of going to the polls with the prospect of making a difference in the election outcome. We present a stochastic model of turnout where voters receive information about current turnout propensities of the voting populus t...
متن کاملThe Costs of Voting: Evidence from a Natural Experiment
This paper uses the consolidation of polling places in Los Angeles County during the October 2003 gubernatorial recall election to study the costs of voting. The consolidation afforded an opportunity to observe a natural experiment: those whose polling places were changed in the consolidation should be statistically comparable to those whose polling places are not changed. Thus, we may observe ...
